Torrential Rains Cause Traffic Chaos and Displacement

Waterspout Captured on Video at Palm Jumeirah

Dubai, UAE - April 17, 2023 - A severe storm has battered the United Arab Emirates and Oman this week, bringing unprecedented rainfall that has caused widespread flooding, traffic disruptions, and the trapping of residents.

Videos circulating online have captured a rare sight: a small tornadic waterspout forming on a beach at Dubai's iconic Palm Jumeirah. The waterspout moved from the water to the shore, raising concerns about potential damage.

The deluge has overwhelmed Dubai International Airport, a major hub for long-haul carrier Emirates. Flights have been disrupted as the airport is flooded, hindering travel worldwide.

Meteorologists have recorded over five inches of rainfall in Dubai between Monday and Tuesday, approximately equivalent to the average annual precipitation at Dubai International Airport. This extreme rainfall event is the largest recorded in the United Arab Emirates in 75 years.

The flash flooding has turned roads into raging rivers, leaving homes and businesses inundated with water. Emergency services are working relentlessly to respond to the situation and assist affected residents.

The storm is expected to continue over the coming days, raising concerns about further flooding and damage. Residents are advised to stay indoors and follow official safety instructions.
